‘That’s the aim’ – Paul McNally highlights City of Liverpool goal ahead of tough Christmas

Paul McNally is looking for City of Liverpool to have a fantastic Christmas as they face three tough games.

The Purps returned to the Northern Premier League West with a deserved 2-1 win away at Runcorn Linnets. Still with two games in hand, they were moved to 21 points and sit 15th – five points clear of the relegation zone.

In recent seasons, the APEC Taxis Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for McNally and City of Liverpool after beating Linnets in the same fixture 12 months ago.

But there was an element of surprise from the Purps boss following the win.

“I wasn’t expecting us to go and be as dominant, we were dominant and there was a time when we were so dominant with the ball but didn’t look like scoring,” McNally admitted to Off The Park.

“A few changes and it changed the game, thoroughly deserved, it was pleasing that we got the points because not many teams go there and win.

“It’s filled us with confidence but we know we’re a good side, the league table has possibly give us a false position but we needed to get three points to push on because teams above us are winning.

“It’s all well and good having games in hand but you can fall further behind, we’ve won and other teams have won but we’ve got to keep on people’s tails.”

Their unforgiving Christmas period begins with a visit of Clitheroe before tests against Bootle and Vauxhall Motors. But with the recent form and City of Liverpool showing their versatility to win matches, McNally has high hopes as they look to claw their way up the table.

He added: “We’ve got three games in the space of seven days coming up, if we can get nine points that’d be great and be a fantastic Christmas, that’s the aim.

“We’ve added a few different strings to our bow. When we’ve not been playing well, we’ve won and earlier in the season, we were playing well and not getting the rewards, it’s good that we’re winning in different ways because to be up there challenging, you have to win in different ways.”
