Ste Daley makes Prescot Cables playoff final admission as City of Liverpool threat outlined

Prescot Cables celebrate Bootle win

Ste Daley says Prescot Cables have to make a good season into a ‘great’ one as they eye promotion to the Northern Premier Division.

The Bulls host City of Liverpool in the West Division playoff final on Saturday at another sold-out Joseph Russell Stadium.

Kyle Sambor was the hero for Cables after they saw off the challenge of Bootle after extra-time, in a 1-0 win.

They welcome Paul McNally’s Purps who continued their formidable run of from after upsetting Runcorn Linnets at the APEC Taxis Stadium. Elliot Morris was the match-winner with a double to down the hosts.

Cables beat City of Liverpool in both of their meeting during the league campaign, winning the corresponding fixture in Prescot 2-1, with Sambor and John Murphy on target, before securing a 4-1 triumph in the reverse fixture, thanks to a second-half Sambor brace as Murphy rounded off the scoring late on.

“They have done unbelievably to get to where they are because they’re on an unbelievable run,” Daley told Off The Park

“They’re a good team but we’ve got to back ourselves, we won not doing the things we’ve been good at all year, I’m looking forward to getting the lads in and getting them back to what we do well, how we impose ourselves. It’s a final, anything can happen, it’s going to be a good day.”

Online tickets sold out in around 17 minutes as a capacity crowd is expected to go through the turnstiles. Daley believes the Hope Street stadium is made for games of Saturday’s magnitude as he looks for his side to cap off a brilliant campaign.

He added: “This stadium is fantastic, over 2,000 (against Bootle), not just for Prescot itself but for the club, it’s set to hold massive games like the semi-final and Saturday. We’re looking forward to it, it’s going to be tough but we’re confident that if we do the right things we can get there.

“We’ve got ambition, we want to strive and go with it. We’ve had a really good season but we’ve got one more job to do. We can turn a good season into a great season, that’s the plan but hopefully another great day for the club and the fans.”

Morris is among the many dangermen in the Purps artillery, finding the back of the net in the previous meeting. And the encounter is too close to call with both sides looking set to cancel each other out with Cables going into the clash having not conceded a goal in over 300 minutes of football.

“They’ve got good players, they’ve got a very good team and the run they’ve been on suggests that. But we’ve shown we’re resilient, three clean sheets in a row and we’ve got great players of our own that can turn the game on its head,” the Cables boss added.

“It’s a must-win game, a one-off game, it’ll be a great occasion and but Tuesday is only a good night (if we win on Saturday), if we lose, it doesn’t mean much, we’ve got to go win on Saturday and finish the season strong.

“That’s the plan, that’s what we’ll to do, they’ll want to do the same, anything can happen but we’ve got to make sure we do our jobs, get back to where we’re at and I’m sure we’ll get over the line.”
