Runcorn Linnets search for new manager after Billy Paynter decision

Runcorn Linnets manager Billy Paynter

Runcorn Linnets are on the hunt for a new manager after the resignation of Billy Paynter.

The 39-year-old left Linnets days after they lost in the Northern Premier League West playoff semi-final against City of Liverpool. Elliot Morris scored twice as the Halton club’s unwanted run of three consecutive defeats in the playoffs continued.

Paynter led them to their highest-ever league position this season as they finished second, 10 points behind runaway champions Leek Town, as well as the FA Cup second-round qualifying where they were beaten by National League North side, Chorley.

The former Port Vale and Swindon striker was installed as interim manager after Dave Wild was sacked last March.

Despite the shock dismissal of Wild, Paynter helped Runcorn to the playoffs and playoff final. However, they suffered disappointment away at Workington in a 2-1 defeat after extra-time.

Following their success, Paynter put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal at the APEC Taxis Stadium last summer, which was due to expire at the end of the 2025 season.

However, they made the decision in the aftermath of the defeat to the Purps – who have got the better of Runcorn in their last four meetings in Halton.

In a statement, the club said: “It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Runcorn Linnets boss Billy Paynter has decided to step down as first team manager. We would like to say thank you to Billy for the incredible hard work he has put in for the last two years.”

Paynter said: “I would like to thank Peter Cartledge and the board for giving me the opportunity to manage and be part of Runcorn Linnets the past two seasons.

“(I’d) Also like to thank Darren Moore, Gaz Moore, Liam Page, David Phillips, Jamie Rainford, Alan Knell, Dan Jago and Sara Seo for their help and support.

“Thank you to all the players who were part of the journey and shared the experiences, through the highs and lows.

“Reaching the: Cheshire Cup semi final, giving five players who came through the academy (the opportunity) to play for the first team, Liverpool Senior Cup final, play-offs and a play-off Final, 7-0 Runcorn derby win and finishing second this season and once again making the play-offs.

“Also thank you for the amazing support home and away from the Yellow and Green army.

“Finishing 2nd giving Runcorn Linnets their highest finish in years was a great achievement and success by all but a few days later to lose our Play-off game was then a season failure.

“And with that failure, I take full responsibility and I will be stepping down as Runcorn Linnets FC manager

“I wish the club all the best and success in the future.”
