Billy Paynter was pleased to see Runcorn Linnets’ resilience during their win against Avro – and expects the visit of City of Liverpool to be no different.

Will Saxon’s stoppage-time winner earned the three points in Greater Manchester for Linnets, moving them to within three points of the top.

Oliver Molloy was on target to open the scoring during an ill-tempered encounter that saw three red card – two of which for Linnets.

Despite the incident, Paynter was delighted that his side showed a different side to their game but is under no illusions that their encounter with City of Liverpool will be a walkover.

“We knew Avro was going to be a tough place to go, we had a couple of injuries, we had to reshuffle the group but with the players we have, I’m always confident going into games,” he told Off The Park.

“They’re in and around us so when we’re competing against those teams you want to be taking points off them, they could’ve went up to second so it was good to score last minute.

“At times, we had to roll up our sleeves, be dogged, at times it wasn’t pretty but at the end of  the day, we got the three points. It puts us in a nice position and hopefully we can kick on against City of Liverpool, another derby which won’t be easy.

“We played them earlier in the season, they’re a very good footballing side and had a great cup run. I felt they were in a false position, they’ve kicked on and got points in the league, a fantastic cup run but I’m sure now they’ll be focusing on the league with a view to be climbing up.

“We won’t be taking it lightly, we know what competition they are and I’m really looking forward.”
