Michael Ellison has been pleased with Widnes’ recent run – but has called for more composure when it matters.

The Whites made it six unbeaten with their 2-0 win away at Nantwich Town on Tuesday which moved them to within three points of the playoff positions.

Widnes travel to Bootle on Saturday looking to extend their run and dent a fellow playoff rivals’ hopes.

Ellison’s side tend to go toe-to-toe with teams around them but fail to reach the standards against those at the wrong end of the table.

He told Off The Park: “When a big club comes to town, I do feel like we up our game. The teams who we have beaten are in and around us, Runcorn Linnets and City of Liverpool – two inform teams at the timme – came to us and we won one, and drew one.

“The teams that are below us, we just take our foot off the gas or it’s a mental thing, I can’t put my finger on it, when we need to take the game by the scruff of the neck we don’t do that.

“There’s something there we need to address, against Trafford it’s two points dropped and it’s happened far too many times this season, those games where you’re ahead and should see the games out – it’s something we’re trying to work on. We’re in a decent position but we just need to try score more goals.

“It’s tough, away from home are tough games but we’ve proved that we can compete with any teams in the league,” added Ellison.

“We’ve been in every game that we’ve played, I don’t remember anyone giving us a hiding so first and foremost, we’re built on clean sheets and keeping out the opponents, I just feel we need to take a few risks and have a little bit of composure.

“I don’t like to look too far ahead, we’ve got to go there, be difficult to beat – we’ll have chances – and if we can stop them playing and take your chance, you’ve got the chance to get the points. If you can’t get three, we don’t lose the game and that’s how you look at it.”
