‘Anything is possible’ – Neil Young gives Marine promotion verdict after Liverpool Senior Cup triumph

Marine manager Neil Young says ‘anything is possible’ with his side as he heaped praise on his players in their playoff hunt.

The Mariners inflicted further misery on already-relegated Atherton Collieries as they ran out 4-0 winners to book their place in the playoffs.

Results elsewhere, plus Ashton United’s 5-1 defeat at Matlock Town, secured their place in the top five. Now it remains whether Marine will finish in third, sealing a home semi-final, or finishing in fourth where they will travel to rivals Warrington Rylands.

Young’s side won back-to-back Liverpool Senior Cups on Tuesday after beating City of Liverpool 2-0 to retain the competition for the first time in the club’s history.

“Anything is possible with these lads, we just keep going,” he told Off The Park. “Worksop have won so if they win, it doesn’t matter what Ashton do against us, the mindset for us is to try and win the game.

“We want this (home advantage) again on Tuesday, to do that we have to win. We have to match or better Rylands but we will be going there trying to win a game of football.

“We want to be here (at home), I don’t know what our form is like in recent weeks on this pitch but don’t think we’ve lost many or conceded many.

“Rylands are good away from, we know it’s them, it’s just whether it’s home or away, wait and see. Let’s enjoy (our win over City of Liverpool) that’s one thing I’ve not done enough in my career because you’re quickly moving on to the next one.

“To some this might not be much, to me it’s a lot. I always remember Liam Watson telling me, it’s a competition go and win it and it’s the first time Marine have to win it back-to-back.

“We’ve got massive games, we’re saying they’re massive now but they have been for the last eight because we’ve had to win them or close to being perfect to get into the playoffs.

“We’ve won six, lost one, when we lost at Rylands I said if we win our last eight (league games) we’re in the playoffs and we’ve won seven, we’ve got to keep going.

“These lads can achieve anything, it’s a semi-final and a final but it’s the same for Macclesfield, Rylands, Worksop, Ashton or Hyde, they’ll be believing they can win games of football.”
