Warrington Rylands 0-3 Gainsborough Trinity: Rylands rue mistakes in opening day defeat

Warrington Rylands Gainsborough Trinity Match Report

Jack Dyche, Andrew Wright and Clayton Donaldson found the back of the net as Warrington Rylands’ season opened with a defeat to Gainsborough Trinity.

It was a nightmare start for David McNabb’s side as Stephen Irwin had his pockets picked straight from kick-off. It allowed Tom Cursons to fly down the left where he squared it to Dyche, who tapped into an empty net.

Rylands‘ Ryan Brooke looked to answer back immediately but his half-volley fizzed just over the bar. Kane Drummond then forced a fine save from Matt Yates who tipped over.

But the visitors made it two after 14 minutes when Wright stepped up to send Sam Tickle the wrong way from the penalty spot after Adam Buxton handled in the box.

Gainsborough went close to a third in the first-half when Tickle was beaten to a cross by Mackenzie Warne, luckily for the hosts, Buxton was alert to clear off the line.

Callum Dolan saw his free-kick flash past the goalkeepers near post after Brooke was fouled by Ethan Boajeng on the stroke of half-time.

But after the restart, former Brentford and Birmingham City striker Donaldson grabbed Trinity’s third and the game’s final goal.

An in-swinging free-kick was on a sixpence and the 38-year-old headed into the back of the net.

As they looked for an avenue back into the game, Dolan and James Barrigan hit the target but the efforts were bread and butter for Yates.

But the visitors frustrated the hosts and handed Rylands a defeat in their curtain raiser.
