Skem United move on in the FA Cup as Danny Mitchley inspires

Skelmersdale United manager Paul McNally was delighted with the performance of his forward Danny Mitchley during their 2-0 win over Vauxhall Motors in the FA Cup replay.

Mitchley scored what proved to be the winning goal with a wonderful curling strike in the first half.

McNally praised his striker for a traditional “centre-forwards” performance likening him to Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

“I don’t think there was anyone who give me a bad performance and the standout player was Baba Conteh, he done everything, he broke up the play when he needed to, he done what was asked of him, he set the traps for us to win the ball and play.

“But the other one, he was outstanding, it was a proper centre-forwards display was Danny Mitchley, I thought he was head and shoulders not only the best player but best forward, the way he led the line like an Alan Shearer, to cap it off he got a fantastic.”

Despite the win, the Skem manager felt that the scoreline flattered the visitors despite a strong start from Motors.

He added: “To be honest, it was a good start by them, I thought they were the better team.

They imposed themselves on the game, we got into the game by basically playing the football that I’ve asked of the lads to play.

We started getting on the ball, we matched them for effort, then our football dictated how we played and we showed how good a footballing side we are rather than being a physical team although it’s good to have both.

I think they’ll hold their hands up and say they got out of jail quite easily because 2-0 may be an unfair reflection, it could’ve been a lot more four, five with the chances we had. But we were wasteful with the chances we had. I’m gutted we haven’t put more past them, but it is what it is, we’re through to the next round, whether it was 1-0, 2-0, 5-0, doesn’t matter.

“I’m happy my forwards got on the scoresheet; Elliot Morris – albeit a lucky one – he got up, he headed it you’ve got to get in there. [Danny] Mitch scored a worldie thought he was outstanding on the night anyway, led like a proper centre forward.

“Mini [Adegbenro] hit the post and we could’ve had a couple more Mikey Howard’s come on, created two or three opportunities, and had some chances of his own, we’ve had opportunities we’re hoping we can take it forward through the season.”
