Paul McNally sends Skelmersdale United warning to Macclesfield as two continue battle at the top of NWCFL

Michael Howard scores a penalty to seal his hat-trick for Skelmersdale United

Skelmersdale United manager Paul McNally has praised his side for their “efficient” win over Padiham as Michael Howard scored a hat-trick.

The former Marine man took home the match ball as he fired all of Skem’s goals helping them keep the pressure on league leaders Macclesfield.

After the postponement of their trip to Winsford United, they returned to action and calmly dispatched the Lancashire side.

“It was efficient, the performance was efficient but we got the job done, scored three, kept the three points that’s all” that matters. Good day at the office,” he told Off The Park.

“We done what we had to do without breaking sweat. I thought Padiham played well, they made it tough for us and once we scored pretty early, we seem to go through the motions a little bit.

“But we controlled it without giving an excellent performance, against Vauxhall we were great for 40 minutes but this was just doing what we had to do, a controlled performance.

“Mikey’s [Howard] hat-trick, they were the standouts. Ben Barnes made a good save in the second half at 2-0, if they scored could’ve made it a little bit tougher. It wasn’t a fantastic game to watch, it was a typical December game in treacherous conditions and we got what we had to done.

“Mikey’s a top player, on form on Saturday. That’s not to take away from the rest of the group, they supply him, set him up and give him the platform to play. But Mikey’s a top player for our level.

“That was the main thing that we got the win, with having the week before off we just needed to get back to winning ways and put the points on the board – and we did that. We’ve got a break now so we’ve got to get back to winning ways again when we play [next], we’ve just to keep prodding along.

“Hopefully they’ll drop points, if not we’re waiting for them to drop points until we play them.”
