Paul McNally has expressed his pride in his City of Liverpool side after going toe-to-toe with Hartlepool United – but says their focus is on getting points in the league.

The Purps exited the FA Trophy in the third round after a valiant effort against the National League side on a historic occasion for the club.

Their return to Northern Premier League West action was delayed after the postponement of their midweek fixture away to Witton Albion.

They resume their league campaign in another massive encounter as they make the short journey to Runcorn Linnets. Three points separate City of Liverpool and the bottom two, although the position may seem precarious, it is somewhat false for McNally’s side and he has his sights on surging up the table and challenging in the upper reaches of the division.

“I’m very proud of them, on the day I thought we were very good. We haven’t won anything but we’ve put us back in good spirits and in a good position where we’re building something good. Now, we have to push on and start moving forward which isn’t easy,” he said speaking to Off The Park.

“We’ve been in this position a couple of times already due to the cup exploits but we’ve got to put points on the board because teams keep winning, now we’ve got to start getting us where I feel our performances reflect.”

Linnets are in a good run of form and are looking to go one better in the league – following successive playoff final defeats. The trip to Billy Paynter’s side sparks a busy festive period which sees them pit their wits against four out of the five teams challenging for the playoffs.

McNally added: “We’ve got tough fixtures over Christmas, it’s not been kind to us but it hasn’t been kind to anyone because there’s no easy games. We’re looking forward to it, it’s a busy Christmas period and this is why we’re involved in football, it’s hectic but we enjoy it.

“It’s good to get back in the league, we can start putting performances in and points on the board because we’ve had consistent performances but it’s about getting the points which is imperative for us.

“They’re flying at the minute, they’re a tough, organised team that play good football. We’re under no illusions, it’ll be a difficult game but we’re going there to take the points which I’m sure they’re saying the same.”
