‘The benchmark’ – Paul McNally eyes another winning run after impressive City of Liverpool form

City of Liverpool manager Paul McNally

Paul McNally says City of Liverpool’s impressive run ‘exceeded expectations’ but says they need to get back on track following successive defeats.

The Purps picked up maximum points from their encounters with Runcorn Linnets, Clitheroe, Bootle and Vauxhall Motors, but their unbeaten run came to an end against Leek Town before in-form Witton Albion edged them out.

Their winning record catapulted them to within four points of the top five. With a run of three home matches coming up they have the perfect chance to spark another run but they face a tough start against fifth-placed Avro.

“I couldn’t have asked much more, four wins on the bounce – it exceeded expectations,” McNally told Off The Park.

“The lads performed absolute miracles and were tremendous throughout those four games, I don’t think many teams picked up maximum points like we did, it’s a credit to the lads and how well they’ve done.

“In the grand scheme of things, we were beaten by Leek – top of the league, potentially going to get promoted – so there’s no shame in that. Witton Albion, another team in form, but it wasn’t a good game, it could’ve went either way and we wasn’t at the races.

“We’ve got to dust it off and look at the positives, a few months ago people weren’t looking at us the same way as they are now, that’s credit to the lads and the hard work they’ve done.

“They’re a top team Avro, they’re well-organised with some great players so there’s probably not a harder game to try and bounce back. We’ll prepare right, we’ll look to get back on track and work harder than ever to push on. We’re four points outside the playoffs, it’s the benchmark that we’ve set and hopefully we can push in the right direction.”
