Michael Smith explains why FC St Helens run could be huge

FC St Helens

FC St Helens manager Michael Smith has described their next three games as “huge” with promotion on the horizon.

The Stripes are 11 points clear in the North West Counties Division One North ahead of nearest challengers Route One Rovers.

Smith’s side have scored eight in their last three after wins Steeton and AFC Blackpool before a good point away at play-off chasing Ashton Town.

He told Off The Park: “We’ve still not lost in that time, we got a good point against Ashton Town – we could’ve won it, we could’ve lost it.

“With the side they have, they have an established NPL (Northern Premier League) side, effectively, with bags and bags of experience. To compete with them, we went for it, stuck to the gameplan and it puts us in a good place.”

It will be a weekend off for St Helens after their clash with playoff-chasing Holker Old Boys but Smith feels that the upcoming run could make or break their push for promotion.

“All the teams around us have to play each other, for us it’s good,” he added. “The rest of the teams around us have all dropped points, we’ve had some games called off in the last month.

“We’re hoping that the bad weather is behind us and we can tick games off one at a time, I think we need to get 12 points to win the league and that’s with all the teams around us winning. Our next three at home are going to be huge.”
