Michael Smith makes ‘brilliant’ FC St Helens admission after double success

FC St Helens

FC St Helens manager Michael Smith says winning the Champions Cup was the icing on the cake of their campaign.

The Stripes beat North West Counties Division One South winners Brocton FC to complete the double in Smith’s first season in charge.

FC won the North Division by a convincing margin which set up the clash between the winners of the respective divisions. Ethan Van-Aston’s first-minute strike was enough to separate the two sides.

Smith could only describe it as a “brilliant” return after securing promotion to the Premier Division – capping the latest chapter in FC St Helens’ 10-year history.

“We were short in numbers in the squad, trained in the week and had a plan, I knew where we could hurt them but equally, where they could hurt us,” he told Off The Park

“Putting that into practice on Saturday was pleasing to see, losing our last league games, we’d gone away from everything we did good in the season but getting back to the principles in the final was pleasing.

“We didn’t allow them to settle, it was good and to come away with another trophy, it was unbelievable.

“For us, it was always about promotion, it was never in our minds. Even when we won, I completely forgot about the game but it’s been a bonus for us. We’ve been promoted, won the league and anything else was a bonus.”
