Marine manager Neil Young offers squad update as Guiseley trip looms

Marine manager Neil Young is happy with his squad as the Northern Premier League season looms – but hasn’t ruled out making further signings.

Last season’s playoff winners were dealt a tricky hand going into pre-season as Young was forced to rebuild his squad after losing a number of players.

With a week to go ahead of their season opener against Guiseley AFC, Marine have welcomed Jake Burton – on loan until January – and Jordan Lussey with another addition in the pipeline before Jonny Spittle signed after leaving Bala Town.

Although, the Mariners manager didn’t rule out further additions with an eye on a wide player or striker should one be available.

Ahead of their final pre-season friendly with neighbours, City of Liverpool, Young told Off The Park: “It’s pre-season isn’t it, it’s the same as it normally is.

“Pre-season is about getting minutes and results as well, you’ve seen that we’ve been upping the team each time in terms of numbers (of players) we’ve had two good victories in the last two games and we play City of Liverpool on Saturday.

“Got three signings happening this week (Jake Burton, Jordan Lussy), three more players coming in,” he said when talking about additions. “Andy Hollins has had an injury in training so he’s going to be out for two to three months which is a bit of a blow. We’ve got three players coming in this week, waiting on FA confirmation.

“They’ve done okay, it’s a virtually new team being put together,” Young assessed after he was asked how the new arrivals have fared in pre-season. “If you look at the team from Runcorn Linnets (friendly) and go through it, I’m not sure how many started last year.

“We’re still probably one short at the top of the pitch if I’m honest, if everything else goes to plan with the lads who are meant to come in I think everywhere else we’re okay. If a forward comes available or a wide, quick player then we’ll be in the market if not we’re happy with what we’ve got. But if a striker becomes available that will help us and a wide player with pace then we’ll look to add him as well.”
