Prescot Cables looking to continue momentum as Ste Daley eyes Leek Town showdown

Ste Daley and the Prescot Cables management team

Prescot Cables manager Ste Daley is looking to continue their momentum against runaway league leaders Leek Town.

The Bulls progressed to the semi-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup after Francis Smith’s second-half strike was enough to see off Bootle.

Cables are now unbeaten in four in all competitions, with their last defeat coming against the Staffordshire side in mid-February.

Daley was left pleased with their recent displays amid the adversity with injuries and postponements. He told Off The Park: “We were excellent on Tuesday night, we’ve had a difficult run of games and a few injuries too which haven’t helped but the lads have coped well.

“That’s football, at every level you’ve got to be on it and if you’re not, anyone could come and turn you over. At this stage of the season, you need to keep grinding out games and putting points on the board.

“Witton was a massive result, they were second in the form table at the time, and with the team we put out, it was a great result – they were fantastic.

“Kidsgrove was a different game, we wasn’t at it and didn’t play well but we went away and came back with a point. In this league, it’s important when you’re not playing at your best to come away and get something, it goes a long way towards where you’re going to finish at the end of the season.”

Leek have a 15-point cushion over Cables going into Saturday’s encounter. For Daley’s side, they’re very much looking over their shoulder as they remain level on points with both third-placed Runcorn Linnets and Bootle.

The Cables boos insists the game is not a dead-rubber and has noted how his side have dealt with pressure after defying expectations to be challenging at the top of the league for most of the season.

“When we played them last time, there was only three points up for grabs and it was the same last time,” he said.

“You can talk about pressure but I think our lads have stood up to it well, the lads have been up there all season – which has been unexpected – and the lads stood up to it, Saturday will be no different.

“We go to Leek confident on the back of a good result against Bootle and we’ll go try and take three points, that’s the aim. We know it’s a difficult game but it’s certainly one we can win.”
