Widnes forward John McGrath scores the winner against Prescot Cables

We’ve reached the half way stage of the season and with the busy festive period coming, Off The Park spoke to a group of Widnes FC fans, spearheaded by Tom.

Thoughts on the season so far?

It’s been a tough season with the managerial change but I think what Dempsey brings to the table will move us up the league once he has the team playing how he wants them to.

There’s been a change in atmosphere since David has come in the players look like they want to be there and want to get the win for the gaffer and fans. The results will come.

Worst moment of the season & why?

The worst moment of the season has to be the lose against Runcorn. They are a good side with talented players but it’s still not nice to lose to them. The performance was good but individual errors meant we couldn’t get 3 points. It was a tough one to take

Best moment of the season?

The best moment of the season has to be Prescot. The passion that was shown from the players that night was exceptional. Despite a hostile environment and issues with the crowd and our dug out, the lads kept their heads and got the 3 points. The feeling after that win was like no other. That was a memorable night for me and the lads.

Signing of the season

The signing of the season was a tough one. Everyone the gaffer has brought in have been exceptional. But we have struggled for a natural finisher for some time until McMillan came in. He’s not just bringing goals but he works hard off the ball too. Like I said there are many quality signings but he just tops it for me.

Current player of the season & why?

John McGrath has been immense since he joined. He is an all round quality player and what he brings to the team is something else. If I was a defender I would have sleepless nights thinking about how to mark him. He’s such a tricky player. He’s good with both feet and hasn’t got a bad strike either. To top it off he scored the winner against cables I’ll respect anyone who scores against them.

Realistic ambitions for the rest of the season

A realistic ambition for the rest of the season is to just start picking up points and making the DCBL a hard place to come to. Obviously, we would love to be fighting for promotion but we aren’t quite at that stage yet but we will get there I’m sure of it. With the players, manager and board we will progress it will just take time. The lads would just like to say Thanks to David Dempsey for bringing some passion to the club and a drive in the players. There was a spell when players looked like they couldn’t be bothered but not since David’s arrived. So once again thanks Demps.
