Bootle face Avro playoff challenge as Mick McGraa outlines plan

Michael Burkey celebrates for Bootle

Mick McGraa is looking for Bootle to extend their unbeaten run when they face Avro on Saturday.

The Bucks moved into the playoffs last weekend, following their 3-1 win over Nantwich Town after Michael Burkey netted a hat-trick. Their win made it five matches without a defeat, picking up three wins during that time.

Bootle have a difficult run on the horizon as they travel to the Vestacare Stadium before making the trip to another playoff rival in Clitheroe.

Burkey stole the headlines with a superb treble but McGraa felt like it could’ve been more. He told Off The Park: “Apart from the horrendous start where we conceded early in the first-half, I thought we were dominant within the game, they had chances and caused problems but I thought we were well worthy of the win.

“I think 3-1 flattered them, it could’ve been five or six in the end but it’s just another win and keeps us unbeaten.”

Four points separate Bootle and Avro going into Saturday’s encounter but McGraa’s side face the threat of teams within touching distance of them. Clitheroe, Stalybridge Celtic and Chasetown could all leapfrog the Bucks should they suffer defeat this weekend.

While there is a hope of winning in Manchester, there is also a ‘must not lose’ element. The Bootle boss continued: “It’s going to be a tough game, they are big, strong and physical. They’re a really good team but we are as well, we will go there to try and win but the main aim is not to lose.

“Everyone is beating everyone and no one, apart from Leek, no one has found that consistency of winning every week. I don’t think it’s season-defining, if we win tomorrow it will create clear daylight and teams are playing each other so it could give us breathing space.

“As long as we don’t get beat, I think it’ll be a good weekend. The mindset is to win both, we’re in a good place and confident. Everyone is flying and we’ll be going to win both but sometimes drawing is the best rather than a loss. We are going to try and win, get six points and set us up for the game against Mossley a week later.”
