AFC Liverpool 1-0 Litherland REMYCA: Douglas drags Reds over the line

AFC Liverpool faced Litherland REMYCA in the North West Counties Premier Division

Tom Douglas’ long-range strike snatched three points for AFC Liverpool in a drab game against Litherland REMYCA.

REMY goalkeeper Jack Reynolds will not want to re-watch the goal after Douglas fired in from 30 yards out as the ball squirmed beyond the shot-stopper to seal the points.

Colin McDonald’s side can feel aggrieved for not coming away from Rossett Park without at least a point after the visitors had the greater majority of the play throughout the contest.

They had the first opportunity through Johnny Foy as the striker powered his header goalwards only for Jack McGovern to superbly tip onto the bar.

REMY full-back Kieran Halligan then blazed over from 12 yards after Jamie Clark’s delivery was diverted into the defender’s path.

The visitors did have the ball in the net through Ewan Catt as he header on the rebound nestled in the back of the net but the assistant referee judged the striker to be in an offside position after Paul Foy forced the Non-League Reds ‘keeper into a low diving save.

First-half substitute Richard Wincer had the hosts’ best opportunity in the first-half.

Kyle Schorah threaded him through, the attacker then shifted the ball onto his left-foot but could only fire into the side-netting.

Jamie Hay came closest in the early exchanges in the second-half. He rose highest from James Hammill’s corner but McGovern was on hand to thwart the danger with an unorthodox save to maintain parity.

Both sides enjoyed possession without causing any real danger throughout the latter stages until three minutes from time.

Douglas picked up the ball on the edge of the centre-circle with the visiting defenders back-tracking, he tried his luck and reaped the rewards as Reynolds failed to keep the effort out with the strike creeping in at the left-hand post.

It was a far from an impressive performance from AFC Liverpool as Douglas scored his sixth of the season to add to the hosts’ best ever start of a Premier Division campaign.

Litherland REMYCA remain 18th, five points clear of the bottom two.
